Explore texture and color found around you!

By Illinois Art Station September 24, 2026

Texture is one of the essential elements of art, and it’s all around you. Explore physical texture and practice color matching with this fun and simple tactile rainbow collage! Kids will create rainbow artwork by matching various art supplies and recycled materials to their very own rainbow drawing.

Instructions

Materials

  • Thick white paper or a piece of cardboard (these can be any size!)
  • Tempera paint sticks (markers, paint, oil pastels, or crayons work too)
  • Colorful 3D texture materials like pom poms, stickers, pipe cleaners, construction paper scraps, feathers, pieces of magazines, jewels, sequins, pieces of plastic containers and boxes, etc.
  • Liquid glue
  • Scissors

Directions

  1. Select your coloring materials and paper.
    • Gather all your materials. You will need tempera paint sticks or any of the above alternative in rainbow colors and paper or carboard to start. Use this as practice, what order do the colors traditionally go in? Or, dream up your own rainbow and create whatever that looks like to you!
  2. Color your background.
    • To create the rainbow background, color the paper with strips or shapes using your selected patter of colors and paint sticks.
  3. Gather your 3D texture materials.
    • Explore your arts supplies and other recycled materials you have around your home! Pick out pieces for each color of your rainbow. Cut down your materials to fit on your rainbow background’s matching color. Experiment with how your texture materials are arranged on your background!
  4. Glue your 3D texture materials to your rainbow background.
    • Glue on all your texture items in the same color area of your paper using liquid glue. Some heavier items may require a hot glue gun (have your adult help you)! Set your collage somewhere flat to dry. Enjoy!
